Both Patrick Kelly and Kyemah Mcentyre utilize historical references in their designs to explore black identity. Their vulnerability as artists helps them convey authentic life experiences through their style, making both designers hard to forget. Kelly and McEntyre both received recognition from their work’s exploration of Black identity. Both designers recognize a need for more Black representation in the fashion industry. Both designers also draw on the importance of community and accessibility to fashion, expressing their appreciation of seeing their designs being worn by everyday people on the streets. Furthermore, they view themselves as individuals with a unique perspective that disrupts the current fashion industry creating space for a more diverse fashion culture. In order to honor both creatives, I worked in a small team to style and direct a look book representing their different styles with a focus on the contrast between the city and nature.
